Several years ago in Paris, Thupten Pema Lama heard a recording of Tibetan singing mixed with modern music and thought he'd like to try it someday. A surprise visit and impromptu recording in 1996 in Steve Roach's Arizona studio provided an opportunity to capture Thupten's singing from the Lama Chopa. Some of these chants are devotions to the gurus and deities who assist seekers on the path to enlightenment; others are prayers to the protectors who deflect evil and cleanse the world of imbalances, negative emotions and ego-driven states of mind. All are an integral part of the prayers of Tibetan monks that exude great power and comfort. For Roach, it was a challenge and ended after an 18-day vigil to create sonic space worthy of supporting Thupten's recitations. Prayers to the Protector is a special CD that transcends the accepted definition of music or sacred chant |

The Praises for Guyashamaya (Sangva Duva), traditional Tibetan chant performed by the monks of the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery, Dharamasala. Chanting the praises for the protective deity Guyashamaya is an integral part of Tibetan Buddhist ritual. Accompanied only by the steady tolling of a bell, the slow, rhythmic chanting of the monks produces the vocal overtones that appear as ringing sounds in the extreme upper register |
